I have been reluctant to write on this topic as there are whole books written about it and what I can say in here will be very cursory. However, I think it is important to mention it because, from my reading, M.E./C.F.S. could be mistaken for an uncontrolled and spontaneous arising of the Kundalini energy in someone who is unprepared and it's worth considering this.

What is Kundalini? According to Hindu tradition it is the body's life force that lies coiled, like a snake, at the base of the spine. As it arises, it purifies the body/mind and causes buried emotions and past memories to be brought to the surface to be integrated. If this process is not understood the whole affair can be alarming if not downright terrifying. Suddenly you are experiencing all these weird feelings and many of them are identical to the symptoms reported in M.E./C.F.S. If you had prepared the way though, this energy would rise unhindered bringing states of bliss.

The kundalini energy wants to shake the blocked emotions free, your body might spontaneously move and twitch in order to do this. These movements are often snake like or sinuous. It is a healing, enlightening process but not without some challenges, if unprepared as most of us in the west are. I had never heard of it so how could I prepare?

This kundalini process appears to be a self-directed process but you can work with it or against it. By resisting feeling your feelings and trying to block the emotions, you are working against it. Many of the body/mind therapies that are available today, will help the energy blocks release, will assist the process and your feeling better. Every time you release a blockage, you become more whole, more integrated, the parts you cut off in these emotions, become a constructive part of you. In the end, no emotion is seen as bad, wrong. Does that mean you go around venting anger, aggression, hatred etc. at anyone? NO, you learn to use these energies safely, to transform your life where it is not in your best interest. And maybe later to transform the lives of others where you see injustice, maltreatment or deprivation.

In the west, we have tended to separate the mind and the body in both medicine and spiritual practices and now is the time to unite and integrate them. The body is not to be maltreated in order to attain spiritual growth. I have said elsewhere that I used my body to heal my mind and my mind to heal my body. My body's symptoms are signs where I still have mental, emotional and spiritual work to do. Where this energy is trying to cleanse and heal me. It is still an ongoing process.

N.B. Some people try and raise their kundalini and it's possible but advisable to be under the guidance of an experienced practitioner.

Recovery

As I said above, this appears to be a self directed process in that one thing leads to or exposes another. I can only say that in hindsight, as when I look back, I am amazed at the way I was led from book to person to therapy in a way that would have been impossible for me to work out myself. After all, what did I know? I'd not even heard of kundalini at the time I was affected. And I usually got the information just before I needed it!

Learning to trust too was a major thing for me. Once I accepted that a spontaneous kundalini arising had probably occurred, I started to trust the process and that all would ultimately be well. Sadly that did not mean it was an easy path, I still had to feel the feelings, still had to integrate and forgive. I still had to do the work.

As I have said before, I used my mind to heal my body so this meant meditation, self-enquiry, learning about the messages the body was giving me such as in disciplines like Lifestyle Prescriptions or meta-health. Using my body to heal my mind such as with HeartMath and other breathing practices, massage, yoga, qui gong.
